Building Digital Literacy Culture in East Kutai, Indonesian Teacher Association (IGI) Held The Menemu Baling Workshop for Teachers
After being declared by the regent of East Kutai, H. Ismunandar, on Wednesday 25th of January 2017, Indonesian Teachers Association (IGI) of East Kutai held two days workshop in the meeting room of regent's residence. Around hundred teachers from the districts of East Kutai pursued the workshop about digital literacy on Sunday, 27th of January 2017.
The resource person, Mr. Mampuono Rasyidin Tanuredjo - the General Secretary of IGI, motivated the teachers by introducing his application namely "Menemu Baling." He stated that teachers should not ask their students to do the things they -as teachers - wouldn't also do. He encouraged the teachers to eager to learn new things. He emphasized his statement by reciting the translation of Al Baqarah verse 44.
Training the teachers how to use the application of Menemu Baling (Menulis dengan Mulut, Membaca lewat Telinga or Writing Orally and Reading Auditorily) was a challenge for them to implement digital literacy at that day. Despite some obstacles such as internet connectivity, uncompatible device, and others, they were enthusiastic to finish the challenge. In groups of four, they tried to write a descriptive text. The Writings were based on the observations on thing around them. Then they had to write in five paragraphs using the application.
One of the teachers, Ms. Endah said "Eventhough some handphones are not compatible enough to set this application, I am sure this workshop has broaden teachers' ability to use media for teaching."
At the end of session, Mr. Mampuono quoted Elenor Roosevelt's words about three types of minds "Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people" to highlight his point at the workshop.
